Using electric immersion heating element as secondary

Post by Pankajrb »

Hello, I've Evohome system installed which controls water temperature connected with valiant boiler. There's immersion heater also fitted on system which I was told to be used in emergency if boiler fails. However with the cheaper electricity tariff, I'm thinking to use immersion heater to hot water during off peak and therefore looking to make this immersion heater to be operated as wifi controlled. Is this possible? if so, have anyone tried this product or similar one or other way to achieve this?

Secondly if this is possible, will the existing Evohome hot water sensor still work with this set-up?

Many Thanks in advance, Pankaj

It may be possible,I dont know but, I would be very doubtful that it would make economic sense.
I am with Octopus for gas and electricity.
Gas charge 3p per kwh
Electricity 16p per kwh

You would need very much reduced off peak electric costs to make the change worthwhile.

Thanks anniesboy

I'm on Octopus go, EV Tarif which is 5p off peak (12:30 to 4:30 midnight). With that tarif window, I was looking to start using immersion heating and may be get battery back to up store cheaper electricity and use it in day time as well.

I too have 2 emergency immersion heaters on the unvented cylinder.

Mine are wired via fused spurs and I would have thought something like this would do the job: https://www.ledbulbs.co.uk/products/tim ... rrency=GBP

I now have the same situation of night time electricity being cheaper than gas and so bought a wi-fi controlled fused spur to control the immersion heater. I can now turn it on and off manually, remotely or on a schedule and it is working very well. The only problem is the Evohome system doesn't seem to poll the temperature so it often shows a low water temperature even after the immersion tank has heated it. Not sure how to solve this problem.

Just use a separate WIFI switch via a rated 16 amp relay for the immersion. Unfortunately you can't have two hot water kits with one evohome controller and if your already using it for hot water control of the cylinder, you can't use it for immersion heater control.
