RF Comms Fault

Post by SimonD »

My system includes Hot Water Kit (ATF500DHW), Connected Thermostat Pack (ATP921R3100), HR92s, Standard Boiler and Three Port Valve.

The Hot Water Relay (BDR91 1907), Wireless Cylinder Thermostat (CS92) and Wireless Boiler Relay (BDR91 1910) were installed in our airing cupboard. Initially the two BDR91s were about 20cm apart, one above the other on the same wall. The system works fine, the boiler and hot water start up as and when required. However, there is an annoying "RF Comms Fault for Wireless Boiler Relay" message regularly (2-4 times per day) appearing on the screen of the Central Controller (ATC928).

Having read other posts on this forum (http://theevohomeshopforum.co.uk/viewto ... b5c#p11414) I understand that the BDR91s have to be placed more than 30cm apart. So we moved the Wireless Boiler Relay (BDR91 1910) to the other side of the airing cupboard, more than 1.2m from the other (Hot Water) BDR91 and the Wireless Cylinder Thermostat (CS92). Still we get the regular RF Comms Fault Wireless Boiler Relay messages.

Now we have moved the Wireless Boiler Relay (BDR91 1910) to another room. Its more than 4m from the other (Hot Water) BDR91 and the Wireless Cylinder Thermostat (CS92). Still we get the regular RF Comms Fault Wireless Boiler Relay messages. There are no large metal objects or electrical items (microwave ovens, wireless phones or wireless routers) in a direct line between the Central Controller (ATC928) and the Wireless Boiler Relay (BDR91 1910).

After each time we have moved the BDR91, we have unbinded and re-binded all the wireless relays. The RF Comms Signal check shows signal strength as excellent.

Please advise what we should do next?

Hi Simon,

If you have a Y Plan system, then you do not have a 'Boiler Demand' wireless relay box and hence you are getting the fault.

Have you seen our video for Y Plan setup?

I hope that helps?

Thanks,

Richard

Thank you for your reply Richard.

I watched the video, apart from waiting 5 minutes between binding and pressing ok, everything else seemed the same. However, after rebinding (including waiting the 5 mins) I still got the RF Fault message.

Next I thought about what else you had said
you do not have a 'Boiler Demand' wireless relay box
Looking through the configuration options, I made the following change:
  • Long press on the setting button
    Confirm proceed to Configuration Menu
    Select System Devices
    Select Boiler Control
Change setting from "Wireless Relay Box" to "None"
I hope this is what you were referring to?

Everything seems to be working fine now. I even moved the Wireless Boiler Relay (BDR91 1910) back to its original position in the airing cupboard, 20cm from the Hot Water Relay (BDR91 1907).

Many thanks.

So, when you initially went via 'Zone Guided Configuration' you should have clicked the 'Red X' when it asked you if you had a 'Boiler Demand Relay', hence it was still showing under 'System Devices' > 'Boiler Control' and you were getting the fault.

As for positioning of the wireless devices, the minimum of 30cm spacing as defined on page 4 of the evohome installation guide means the devices will operate correctly and won't fail over time (due to continuous failed transmission cycles with the main evohome Controller). So if you do have a warranty claim and Resideo request photos of the installation, not having the devices a minimum of 30cm would invalidate your warranty on those components, as you are going against manufactures installation instructions.

Don't want you to be caught out by this as others have been in the past.
