Evohome controller ATC928G3000 not powered by mains

I remove the batteries and the unit won't power up from the desk or wall unit. Runs only on batteries (batteries won't charge). Any advice?

Unit is 4 years old (3rd gen).

both small transformer in "plug" failed and cable to wall mounting.

what were the probabilities?!
