can anyone tell me how to remove the top so batteries can be changed?
Pressed the area marked '1' and tried to prise off. Dare not apply much force

Yes I had that problem and being more impatient than you rang for help.
You should not need to press anything just get a fingernail (or screwdriver blade) into the little recess on the back just under the rotating top and pull up. Once I pulled hard enough the top circular part popped off but it is scary the first time as it feels like you are going to break the plastic.
